Wow. This is incredibly raw and real. I love how you’ve turned your fears into something tangible - almost like you’re hosting a birthday party for them! (Which, by the way, is such a powerful reframe.)
A few thoughts:
- Mediocrity: The fact that you’re even writing this post proves you’re not mediocre. Mediocre people don’t self-reflect like this. They don’t care. You’re already ahead.
- Regret of not trying: THIS. This is the one that hits me the most. You’re 100% right - both trying and not trying are painful, but only one of them gives you a shot at something extraordinary
And hey, happy early birthday. Keep being this honest with yourself. It’s rare, and it’s how you’ll win in the long run.
P.S. Next year, I want an invite to the fear party. 😉
LOL your comment came so timely. It’s almost the end of my 30-day doodle challenge and I was thinking of moving on to the next experiment. Or at least trying different styles.
I haven’t heard much from you these days - are you in any writing gyms?
Watercolor! ! I also started drawing recently. I'm trying out abstract painting, just smashing colors together and letting GPT interpret it lol. It's surprisingly informative, eg. the colors i chose unconsciously, velocity of brush strokes and compositions, all kind of meaning something. I find myself in a different mental state when drawing, less thinking (logically) and more feeling with right brain.
I'm curious how the world looks like from your point of view : ))
Writing club - Mostly for talking to people and exchanging ideas. And hold each other accountable to publish regularly.
Writing club - I guess what's stopping me from joining one is I feel my best ideas don't come on a fixed schedule, so I think 80% of the time I would feel like I could better use my time, which is not pareto efficient.
Would love to see some of your watercolor. Is there an essay coming out about it?
RE: how the world looks like. That's a big question. The world feels like one big jungle where everyone is lost - some follow the worn trails because they believe a path means safety, others hack through the wild hoping to find something new. The irony is that most of the trails were made by people who were just as lost but too embarrassed to admit it.

Thank you so much for the encouragement! I’m sure I’ll keep revisiting this comment when I run into the same fears again.
P.S. I really enjoy your notes and doodles! Please don't stop. That would be my next fear.

wow 30-day challenge sounds so interesting! Looking forward to your next experiment.
I joined Michael Dean's writing club, so I usually go to the gyms there. Which ones do you normally go to ?
Oh I go to the silent writing gym that I run for myself. Happens every Saturday-Sunday whenever I get up. What do you get out of the writing club?
I haven't had ideas for the next experiment yet. Any ideas? I'm thinking of watercolor but there's a lot of mental friction 💀
